Oral Cancer Awareness Campaign Ideas

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and the perfect time for dentistry to come together and help spread awareness of this terrible disease and raise money to help organizations that are devoted to helping reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research funding, advocacy, and patient support activities.

Social media is currently the best way to spread information so why not put your social platforms to work!

First

What is the goal of your campaign? Educate the public, raise money for an organization?

Second

You will want to decide what organization you want to support. I really like the Oral Cancer Foundation , they are doing great things and are easy to communicate with. They will also send you promotional materials if you reach out to them. Email ingrid@oralcancerfoundation.org .

I'm located in Michigan, Oral Cancer Awareness Michigan is also another great organization. I highly suggest reaching out to your local advocacy group to see if they offer any programs or materials that might be helpful. I often find that messaging through Facebook messenger will result in the fastest response time.

Third

How will you accomplish this goal?

My goal is to spread awareness, educate the public, draw attention to the fact that my office continues to provide our patients with excellant health care- including oral cancer screenings at every hygiene appointment. I also want to raise funds for the Oral Cancer Foundation and give my social media accounts a boost by increasing engagement... and also use this as a way to market my practice to potential patients online.

Ways to do this:

Option 1: Offer complimentary oral cancer screenings for the month of April to all patients, ask patients to share a picture o them self at your office or a stat about oral cancer to social media and tag your office.

Option 2: Give everyone who receives an Oral Cancer Screening a sticker and information card. The card should have oral cancer stats and information about the fundraiser you are holding, you will donate $5 to an oral cancer organization for every patient who shares a picture ot social media and tags your office. (You could run this promotion for the entire month or just a day or week)

Option 3: Every patient who shares to social media... or pays for your screening if you use Velscope, Vizilite or another system is entered into a Giveway drawing for tooth whitening or an electric toothbrush.

You will have a lot of patients who don't use social media, you may want to offer up a donation or entry into your drawing in exchange for them letting you take a picture and posting to your office page. Consider creating a collage as opposed to sharing each individual picture. If you do take pictures of you patients to share I suggest having the patient sign a consent form- you can download one here.

At the end of the campaign don't forget to make your donation and share the final results in your office newsletter and Facebook and Instagram!!
